South Devon Railway, is a seven mile former Great Western Railway branch line, built in 1872, which runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart between Totnes and Buckfastleigh. We will have free time in Buckfastleigh, vibrant, lively and with a touch of mystery surrounding it. Buckfastleigh came into its own in the 11th Century, when King Canute (the one that tried to order the sea to retreat – unsuccessfully) established the Benedictine Buckfast Abbey in 1018.
